As Taiping is one of the oldest towns in Malaysia, it comes with one of the most illustrious historical backgrounds. The name is made up of two Chinese words which means ‘Peace’. The settlement started in the 19th century when tin was discovered by a large number of Chinese settlers. Then the two groups of Chinese settlers were Ghee Hin and Hai San and were feuding over the tin mining activities here. This prompted the British to intervene and took control. Formerly known as Klian Pauh, it was under the administration of Dato’ Long Jaafar, the Minister of Larut under the Perak Sultanate. Long Jaafar is the founding fathers of tin mining in Larut. In 1875, Taiping was the capital of Perak before Ipoh took over as capital in 1937.
